The YMCA of Greater Rochester was looking to upgrades its offerings to its 128,000 members, provide wireless connectivity to its exercise equipment for streaming content, member wireless, and secure wireless for its business networks. The YMCA is spread out over 12 locations. Each environment required a newly designed infrastructure to carry wireless and wired communications to their main location.
The core network needed to support the BYOD traffic of thousands of member’s simultaneously streaming music and video while the exercise equipment streamed Life Fitness data to each treadmill, exercise bike, elliptical, stepper, etc. All of this traffic would need to stay segmented from the business network to secure the YMCA’s data. The requirements were to have 3 different networks, one network for member access, one for the fitness equipment, and one for the business data network.
ATS was tasked with having to design a network to accommodate a high volume of traffic while maintaining consistent performance and high availability for the 128,000+ members and employees that would be utilizing these resources.
Prior to quoting the project, ATS performed a thorough Wireless network survey at each of the locations to properly size the wireless deployment to meet the needs of the customer. We also delivered a scope of services to guarantee the correct solution for the environment based off of our findings. The tools used in this assessment took into consideration the construction materials of each building and local interference from neighboring organizations in an urban area.
ATS put together a Ruckus Wireless solution that consisted of 68 wireless access points being deployed to 12 locations and controlled through centralized Wireless LAN controllers. ATS Engineers also deployed a Cisco switching infrastructure that powered each Wireless Access Point over Ethernet (PoE) to reduce deployment costs and eliminate the need for a power outlet at each of these 68 AP locations to power an access point on the ceiling. Each switch was properly configured to segment the networks into 3 to accommodate the needs of the business, the members and the exercise equipment vendor. Each switch has the ability to process 95 million packets per second all while keeping the network secure.
The solution was designed, developed and configured by two senior engineers on the ATS staff, Nate Decker and Daniel Sweeney. Together they have 30 years of technical experience and hold numerous Security Cisco and Wireless certifications. The ATS staff was able to perform all of the configurations remotely, ship onsite and all sites were deployed by the YMCA staff with ZERO issues. On top of the RUCKUS Wireless Infrastructure, ATS deployed the underlying Cisco network infrastructure with spot on accuracy and implementation was seamless. ATS was able to deliver a completed project 9.75 hours under the quoted budget and all go live dates were met.
