With the holiday season quickly coming to a close, we wanted to share a few tips on how to protect yourself – and your data, as you wrap up your holiday shopping and traveling (and yes, that pun was intended).
Ditch the debit cards
Since debit cards are tied directly to your bank account, it’s often harder for you to be reimbursed once a fraudulent transaction clears. Credit cards typically offer superior fraud protection, meaning less liability falls on you.
Question online sales that are too good to be true
Hackers have a knack for creating fake emails and websites that look nearly identical to the real deal. Misspelled words and links that seem strange are just a few signs of a phishing attempt. Never click a link to a site that seems fishy.
Be careful when tracking
Another popular scam is fake shipment tracking emails. Your best bet is to go directly to the designated (and official) website for USPS/UPS/FedEx/etc. and enter in your tracking number there.
Download a reputable mobile VPN
Just because the airport your layover is in has WiFi, doesn’t mean it’s safe to buy last minute gifts or check your bank account on it. A virtual private network (VPN) helps encrypt and shield your web activity.
Password protect your phone
This seems to be a no-brainer, but password protecting your phone is the first line of defense if someone decides to be a Grinch and swipe it when you’re not paying attention.
