We are seeing more cyber attacks daily. It is estimated that an average of 600,000 users log onto Facebook every day trying to breach a user’s personal security. Because of this, it is important to take every possible measure you can to minimize the chances of hackers getting into your personal online accounts.
Follow these five tips and save yourself the time, money and worry of a cyber attack.
- Create strong passwords. Make your passwords at least 12 characters long include letters, numbers and symbols, and avoid patterns like “123456” or “lmnopq.”
- Change your passwords regularly. Just like your oil change, renew your password every 90 days and avoid using the same security questions and passwords across multiple sites.
- Keep your inbox safe. Enable email scanning by your antivirus, don’t ever trust attachments, and never respond to emails about personal or company information. 91% of cyber attacks start with an email.
- Do not share important information. Always double check to who you are sending to avoid sending information to the wrong person. You can disable autofill in your browser if this has happened more than once.
- Keep your devices secure. Make sure your wireless network you are working on is secure. If you are working out at a coffeeshop, opt for a personal hotspot instead of the cafe’s free open Wi-Fi. You’d be surprised by the number of people waiting for you at the coffeeshop.
Small steps like this can save your devices and you the headache of a hack. It only takes five minutes to avoid possible hours of frustration.
