Each month, one member of our team is asked to select an organization they’re passionate about to be an ADKcares recipient. This month’s charity was chosen by our marketing manager, Jenna Hunsinger.
Why did you choose WIRES to be this month’s ADKcares recipient?
Australia has been in flames since September. Although there currently seems to be a bit of a reprieve, the impacts have been horrific. In a recent article, NPR states, “The merged fire, which straddles the country’s most populous states of New South Wales and Victoria, measures nearly 1.5 million acres, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. It is just one of some 135 bushfires in Australia’s southeast that have claimed the lives of at least 26 people, killed more than a billion animals and damaged or destroyed nearly 3,000 homes”. Yes, you read that right. More than a billion animals have died as a result of these powerful infernos. For the many species that are indigenous to the Australian continent, this drastic reduction in population could prove catastrophic and irreversible. Thankfully, WIRES is working tirelessly to help.
Over the last few months, I’ve seen heart wrenching news reports depicting animals on the brink of extinction as a result of these seemingly uncontrollable fires. As the largest wildlife rescue organization in Australia, WIRES was my obvious choice for ADKcares’ January recipient. According to the WIRES website, “WIRES mission is to actively rehabilitate and preserve Australian wildlife and inspire others to do the same”. It is my hope that between ADKtechs’ and my personal contribution, we can spark change and save innocent lives.
